Short Description

War, international politics, aristocracy, religion, business, corruption, family. For three generations the Belfours, Ellah's and Rainals worked for the British and the Americans as well as themselves. They took part in the war of independance and the civil war in USA. They supplied intelligence to Lord Nelson during both battles of Copenhagen, supplies to the British Navy during the Crimea War. They founded an economic empire in Elsinore in Denmark ( where Shakespeare's "Hamlet" was written ). They destilled spirits, had the patent on the first effective rope-making machine, sold timber, built hugely expensive houses - at a time when the era of sailing ships as transport was coming to an end and the first steamship crossed the Atlantic. Their political connections were widespread. They held the consular posts for both the British and Americans in Denmark for over 50 years. One of them was knighted by Queen Victoria. They were personally connected to the 6th president of the USA. They were governors on St. Croix. They married with Senators and ministers in Germany. They were consuls for Denmark in northern England.

Then in 1857 their empire collapsed. After a hundred years, and within the space of only ten, there were no members of their families left in Denmark. The remnants of the three families retired to England and a less glorious fate.

This book not only documents this amazing story through archives spread across several countries, but follows the genealogy of these familes into the twentieth century. It is a work of great historical value - and at the same time as exciting as only a true saga can be.
